Herman G. Walker, Jr.
Superior Court Judge (Alaska)
AAML Foundation - Joanne Ross Wilder Speaker
Friday, Nov. 7 | 9:00 - 9:45 a.m.
Judge Herman G. Walker, Jr., Superior Court Judge for Alaska’s Third Judicial District, will deliver a keynote address titled Why Public Trust in the Courts Matters to Every Family. Drawing from his decades of service as a trial attorney and judge, Judge Walker will examine the foundations of judicial authority—how it derives not only from the rule of law but also from society’s collective belief in the judicial system. He will address the growing threats of disinformation, political polarization, and the resulting erosion of confidence in the judiciary, underscoring the profound implications this has for families navigating the justice system.
With particular emphasis on family law, Judge Walker will explore how diminished trust manifests in everyday lives: from individuals disregarding court orders to communities taking justice into their own hands. His remarks will challenge the legal community to recognize the judiciary’s responsibility in reversing this trend. Grounded in his work on trauma-informed justice and access to courts, Judge Walker’s presentation offers both a sober warning and an inspiring call to action—reminding us that public trust in the courts is not an abstract principle, but a vital safeguard for strengthening families, communities, and the rule of law itself.
